Demand for aesthetic skin care drives growth

[ad_1]

When Apex Dermatology’s new $8 million headquarters opens in Mayfield Heights this summer, it will include dedicated space for aesthetic services, including injectables (like Botox and fillers), chemical peels, lights and laser devices, and more.

Advances in technology have made procedures more affordable, less invasive and dramatically cut recovery time, contributing to a growing demand, said Dr. Jorge Garcia-Zuazaga, founder and president of Apex, a physician-owned and locally managed practice offering aesthetic, medical and surgical dermatology.

“There’s more demand; there’s more options,” he said. “There’s different tiers of pricing, so that really, the patient or the customer can really pick and choose. You don’t have to go with the, you know, 10-grand procedure from day one. You can do a few things here to get you to where you are.”

Aesthetic dermatology is a “rapidly growing field,” said Dr. Alexandra Zhang, vice president and surgical director of Lucent Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center.

“There is a large demand out there, and I think a lot of my colleagues are doing a great job in providing this service, and so are we,” Zhang said. “I think the market is out there, the demand is out there. I think as long as you’re providing a solid, safe practice and able to deliver the results, I think the business will continue to grow. And I think it is true to everybody, not just me.”

Zhang and Dr. William Camp each left practices at major health systems in the region to open Lucent Dermatology in 2019, starting with a location in Beachwood and adding a their second location in Akron the following year.

It’s difficult to say how much of their practice’s work is aesthetics, surgical or medical, because so much of it overlaps, Zhang said. For example, it’s difficult to separate removing a skin cancer from the aesthetic work that comes next.

“Reconstruction is actually a big part of my practice, meaning that after we finished removing the skin cancer, how to reconstruct the wound afterwards?” she said. “We have to understand what is the aesthetic concern.”

She agreed that technological advances have improved accessibility for a wider range of people, helping drive growth in the field as an aging population has concerns about aging gracefully.

Plus, social media, celebrity culture and the rise of influencers have all played a role in popularizing the procedures, Zhang said.

“The advances in technology and techniques also have made many procedures safer and more effective, which also contributed to the increased demand,” she said. “In the past, people would hesitate to go to certain invasive procedures. … With all the available minimally invasive procedures and advances in the technology and techniques, we can safely provide and meet the needs. That also helps a lot.”

Garcia-Zuazaga also noted that better information and growing awareness of aesthetic procedures has helped to drive the growth.

“Especially when dealing with aesthetics, when you’re spending out of pocket, you want to make sure that you’re comfortable with the procedure (and) you understand the risks and benefits, you understand the training that we’ve done, you understand what’s going to happen before and after,” he said. “There’s a lot that goes into a cosmetic consultation.”

Garcia-Zuazaga said Apex is on schedule and on budget to open its new 18,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in July in Mayfield Heights at the corner of Landerbrook Drive and Cedar Road. In addition to the dedicated aesthetic clinic and corporate offices, the single-story facility will include a clinical office, lab and research center. Apex’s Mayfield Heights practice will move into the new building.

Since its founding 12 years ago, Apex has been steadily growing, most recently opening its 13th location in Avon at 6855 American Way.

Aesthetic dermatology has always been part of the physician-owned and locally managed practice’s services, and each year “we’re raising our aesthetic menu,” Garcia-Zuazaga said. Today, aesthetic services account for about 10% of Apex’s business, with room for growth, he notes.

Some of the most common non-invasive technologies or procedures people are doing right now at Apex are laser hair removal, chemical peels, injectables such as Botox and fillers, and laser for skin resurfacing and redness. The headquarters, including the 2,000-square-foot aesthetic clinic, was created with growth mind, he said.

“I think that we’re positioning ourselves at the forefront of aesthetics in that location,” Garcia-Zuazaga said.

Professional skin care brand Linder Health in April announced it is moving its operations from California to Avon to support the company’s growth. Linder sells products formulated by a dermatologist and an organic chemist to professionals working in the aesthetics market, including spas, dermatologists’ offices and more.

“We provide products and formulas for back bar treatments, mostly like chemical peels, and exfoliating treatments and products to prep for those types of services that you might find in an esthetician office, a dermatologist’s office or a medspa,” said Linder Health CEO Lisa Girolamo.

Linder launched last year with professional products, which Girolamo notes require certification and training to use. This spring the company is coming out with a supporting line of at-home products. The move to Avon offers Linder a larger operations center to accommodate growing demand for its products, as well as a more central location.

“We knew we wanted to be in the Midwest for speed of access to all of our customers, you know, to be able to better service the country as a whole in terms of speeds of shipping, and just in order to be more centrally located,” she said.

Linder ships globally and is in more than half of the 50 states — primarily the coasts and the Sun Belt or “kind of like the smile of the United States,” Girolamo said. It also has a strong foothold in Ohio, which she credits in part to native Ohioan Bob Sivik, Linder Health’s head of sales.

Skin care services — be that estheticians or dermatologists — are really seeing a boom, Girolamo said.

“Especially post-COVID, people really want to get out there and go back to services,” she said. “The skin care market has been growing across the country.”

Chrissy Teigen Gives Hilariously Real ‘Review’ Of Her Family’s Cruise Experience

[ad_1]

Ask any parent and they’ll tell you: You no longer “go on vacation” after you have kids. Nothing is ever relaxing again, so traveling with your family is just a trip to another location. Trips can be even worse for adults if you happen to get sick while away. Chrissy Teigen learned this the hard way when she found herself “full-body sick” on her family’s recent cruise.

“Leaving a disney cruise is like leaving Las Vegas except you only feeeeeel like you binged drugs, and, you are wet. I have never been more sore, I’m coughing up… something, the bottoms of my feet are roasted rotisserie, I just got phone service and I still feel like we are rocking,” she said. “4 days ago feels like… so long ago. our kids must never EVER forget we did this for them. Solidarity to all the other Disney cruise parents.”

The model and TV personality revealed she learned the hard way that motion sickness is a very real thing, commenting to future cruisers to “bring sickness patches!”

Teigen and husband John Legend brought their three kids on the cruise: Luna, 7, Miles, 4, and baby Esti, who was born in January of this year.

While it’s clear that the cruise was not for Chrissy, Luna seems to be a big fan of all things Mickey Mouse. Last April for Luna’s sixth birthday, they headed to Disneyland to celebrate, and at least from the promotional pictures, it looked like everyone had a blast, even mom.

The family took pictures with Minnie in front of the castle and were shown enjoying “It’s A Small World” together.

And her love for Disney goes back even farther than that. In 2019, a much smaller Luna enjoyed an official Disney princess breakfast, dressed up like Belle from head to toe and accompanied by real life princesses like Princess Aurora.

Chrissy has always been real about what it’s like the go on family vacations, from the magical and relaxing to the… other stuff. When the family traveled to Bali several years ago, for example, she shared all the amazing moments, food, and memories right alongside the less-amazing things like bugs, constant breastfeeding, and her toddler’s complete inability to smile for the camera even once.

It’s the balance of being grateful while also keeping it real that’s the key to enjoying yourself (and staying sane) during a family trip — and that’s a hard balance to hit.

An insurance group based in Bermuda has seeded a new foundation with $1 million for the promotion of economic development, education and environmental sustainability initiatives throughout the island.

Global Atlantic Financial Group said the Global Atlantic Re foundation’s inaugural grants focus on:

•Education: building a pipeline of talented professionals at the earliest ages through a partnership with Planet Math, as well as establishment of a Global Atlantic Re scholarship fund for college students.

•Environment: partnerships with environmental organisations whose missions are aligned to make Bermuda, and the planet, a cleaner place to live.

•Economy: collaboration with the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation to provide a small business accelerator grant through a business pitch event to give entrepreneurs a financial path to create jobs and boost revenue on the island.

“We are truly excited about the opportunity to continue contributing to Bermuda’s economic growth,” said Darryl Herrick, president of Global Atlantic Re and co-head of reinsurance.

“The island has an abundance of inspiring organisations doing compelling work to serve the greater good for all Bermudians, and we believe our contributions will play a key role in further amplifying their impact.”

Mr Herrick will join members of the BEDC on Wednesday at the BEDC head office for a press conference formally announcing the partnership and providing further details on that, and how island entrepreneurs can be considered for the grant.

Global Atlantic Financial Group is an insurance company meeting the retirement and life insurance needs of individuals and institutions. It is a majority-owned subsidiary of KKR, a global investment firm.

Why economic growth in sub-saharan Africa could permanently decline

[ad_1]

Sub-saharan Africa could be the biggest loser if the world were split into two isolated trading blocs centered around China or the United States and the European Union, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a new report Monday.

The IMF said in this severe scenario, sub-Saharan African economies could experience a permanent decline of up to 4 percent of real gross domestic product after 10 years according to its estimates—losses larger than what many countries experienced during the Global Financial Crisis.

Economic and trade alliances with new economic partners, predominantly China, have benefited the region but have also made countries reliant on imports of food and energy more susceptible to global shocks, including disruptions from the surge in trade restrictions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. If geopolitical tensions were to escalate, countries could be hit by higher import prices or even lose access to key export markets—about half of the region’s value of international trade could be impacted, IMF said.

The losses could be compounded if capital flows between trade blocs were cut off due to geopolitical tensions. The region could lose an estimated $10 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) and official development assistance inflows, which is about half a percent of GDP a year (based on an average 2017–19 estimate). The reduction in FDI in the long run could also hinder much-needed technology transfer.

The fund noted that for countries looking to restructure their debt, deepening geoeconomic fragmentation could also worsen coordination problems among creditors.

“The region would fare better if only the US/EU cut ties with Russia and sub-Saharan African countries continue to trade freely. In this scenario—termed “strategic decoupling”—trade flows would be diverted towards the rest of the world, creating opportunities for new partnerships, and possibly boosting intra-regional trade. Because some African countries benefit from access to new export markets and cheaper imports, the region as a whole would not incur a GDP loss. Oil exporters supplying energy to Europe could even gain,” it said.

To better manage shocks, the Washington based fund said countries need to build resilience. It used them to build such resilience by strengthening the ongoing regional trade integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area, which will require reducing tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, strengthening efficiency in customs, leveraging digitalization, and closing the infrastructure gaps. Deepening domestic financial markets can also broaden sources of financing and lower the volatility associated with relying too much on foreign inflows.

“To take advantage of the potential shifts in trade and FDI flows, countries in the region can try to identify and nurture sectors that may benefit from trade diversion, for example, in energy. Commodity exporters in the region could potentially displace much of Russia’s energy market share in Europe.

“Countries can also rely on trade promotion agencies to help identify potential opportunities, build the necessary skills and capacity for exports, and eventually re-orient production to take advantage of new trade flows. Improving the business environment, such as by lowering entry, regulatory, and tax barriers could also help,” the IMF said.
